A total of 687 companies are featured on the list, a 35% increase from the previous year, underscoring AI's growing value to the economy.

Deeper Insights into the Growth of German AI Startups

Following last year's trend, we're once again witnessing a significant surge in the number of AI startups across Germany. The 2024 German AI Startup Landscape now features 687 startups, representing a 35% growth compared to the previous year. While this overall growth rate is impressive, it's notably lower than last year's 67%. Out of the 508 AI startups in the 2023 landscape, 467 have remained on the list, with 220 new AI startups added. This indicates an exceptionally high survival rate for AI startups compared to their non-AI counterparts. Of the 41 AI startups no longer featured in the 2024 German AI Startup Landscape, 49% relocated their headquarters outside Germany, 17% were acquired, 10% are in liquidation, and 24% were removed due to being older than 10 years. Notably, almost all AI startups that relocated their headquarters outside Germany established their new base in the USA.

Observations on Growth Rate

From our perspective, two key points regarding the AI startup growth rate are worth mentioning:

  • Discrepancy Between Founding and Listing: Only AI startups with a robust business model, a specific number of FTEs, and internal AI expertise are listed. Consequently, there's a time lag between an AI startup's founding and its inclusion, as only high-quality AI startups are admitted.

  • Moderating Growth Rate: While the growth rate remains high, it suggests a shift towards a more stable and sustainable growth pattern as the AI startup ecosystem matures and consolidates. The slower growth rate could also indicate a more cautious investor sentiment.

Location Insights

As in previous editions, Berlin and Munich continue to dominate the AI startup landscape, accounting for approximately 50% of German AI startups. This year, Berlin once again clearly leads as the German city with the highest number of AI startups (209), with Munich securing second place (136, including suburbs). Other cities like Hamburg (65), Karlsruhe (17), Stuttgart (16), Cologne (16), Darmstadt (16), Aachen (11), Düsseldorf (11), and Frankfurt (10) are catching up with significant growth figures.

At the state level, Berlin (30.4%) once again clearly dominates the AI landscape in Germany, followed by Bavaria (23.3%), Baden-Württemberg (11.5%), North Rhine-Westphalia (10.2%), and Hamburg (9.6%). These five states account for approximately 85% of German AI startups.

Funding Insights

Approximately 38% of the AI startups listed in the 2024 AI Startup Landscape received significant funding (> $1 million USD). The average funding amount received stands at $17.1 million USD, while the median is $5.5 million USD. Notably, 80 AI startups secured over $10 million USD in funding, and 184 received between $1 million and $10 million USD.

Industry Sectors and Business Functions

For AI startups with a clear industrial focus, the key sectors include: Cross-Industry, Human Health and Social Work Activities, Manufacturing, and Transportation, Mobility & Storage. There has been an increase in AI startups concentrating on Cross-Industry and Manufacturing, indicating a maturing state of AI solutions that are increasingly capable of solving complex, real-world problems across various industries.

German AI startups are highly active in Operations, Production, Research & Development, Customer Service & Support, IT & Security, and Sales. The number of AI startups in these areas has significantly increased, highlighting the growing potential to boost efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance quality control across various sectors.

Insights into Generative AI

Generative AI is capable of creating new and unique content for various applications. These models are built by training a foundational model with large datasets and then refined. One in five AI startups in Germany is active in the generative AI space, underscoring the rapid adoption of generative AI technologies within the startup ecosystem.

However, German generative AI startups are attracting limited funding. Excluding outliers, the remaining generative AI startups attract only about $750,000 USD, indicating a significant gap compared to their US counterparts.

Conclusion

We are thrilled by the recognition of our commitment and innovations in the sales sector, especially within the context of advancing AI technology. The German AI ecosystem has experienced significant growth in recent years, and we are proud to be part of this dynamic landscape. We view it as our responsibility to continue dedicating our full efforts to exploring the potential of AI in the sales industry, as we are convinced that artificial intelligence can lead to improvements across many areas. We look forward to continued collaboration with our partners, the development of new ideas, and sustained growth in the years to come.
